The Dominican Republic had an installed power generation capacity of just under 4 GW in 2018, but the government estimates this will need to increase to 5.9 GW by 2025 in order to meet booming power demand.

Currently, around 40% of the country’s power generation capacity is based on fuel oil – down from almost 90% in 2000 – and this is set to decrease further as gas, coal and renewables expand.
