European imports of African piped gas dropped severely in 2019 as lower Asian spot prices made Europe a more attractive destination for LNG suppliers. Imported volumes fell by 28.5% and amounted to 27.63 billion cubic metres. African pipeline gas enters Europe via four connections: the Maghreb-Europe and Medgaz pipelines transfer gas from Algeria to Spain, while the Trans-Mediterranean and GreenStream pipelines link Italy with Algeria and Libya respectively.
