This year has marked the start of Spain’s long goodbye to coal. Carbon prices and lower gas prices have taken their toll on coal-fired power generation in Spain, which has been pushed to only 4.5% of the power mix on average so far in 2019 compared with 14% in 2018.

The average for combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGTs) in the power mix stands at around 22% so far this year compared with 11.5% last year.
