European wholesale gas markets are becoming more competitive overall, while security of supply has been strengthened in most EU member states in recent years. This means Europe is much better prepared for potential gas shortages and supply disruptions, for example if Russia and Ukraine should fail to reach an agreement on gas transit when the current contract between the two expires on 1 January next year.
