China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Uganda National Oil Co. to jointly explore a new oil and gas block in the southern part of Lake Albert in Uganda, the Ugandan government said on Thursday.

The project aims to increase Uganda’s oil output to support a planned refinery and export pipeline to neighbouring Tanzania. The deal was signed in Beijing at the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation.
