South Korean power demand rose by 4.1% in H1 2018 compared with H1 2017 to reach 261.7 TWh. The rise in demand supported gains in thermal generation. However, the rise in demand did not benefit all thermal generation throughout H1. The use of coal for power generation was flat on an annual basis in Q2 when the country’s older coal-fired power plants were offline to help reduce emissions.
