US coal consumption was down by 11% in H1 2019 compared with the same period a year earlier, recent data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed. Coal consumption amounted to 287.2 mt in H1 2019, down from 324.8 mt in H1 2018. This led to a significant increase in US coal stocks over the spring, which jumped by nearly 15% between Q1 and Q2, to 143.8 mt.
