Chinese coal imports look unlikely to provide a boost to regional coal prices this winter. Temperatures are forecast to be around average in January across much of the country. Prolonged periods of below-average temperatures are not forecast. The absence of severe cold snaps, combined with continued coal-to-gas switching, will limit the upside for heating-related coal demand at the peak of winter.
