Americas Consumption

December 2018

Unfavourable economic and weather-related factors will moderate growth in Latin America’s gas demand in 2019.

The prospects of higher rainfall in Brazil during the southern hemisphere summer (December-February) will boost the country’s hydropower generation, thereby reducing power sector gas demand. Brazil’s northeast remains particularly vulnerable to drought during summer, but any water shortage this summer is likely to be less severe. Preliminary forecasts suggest rainfall in the region will be average during summer 2018-2019, whereas precipitation was 1.4 mm per day below average during summer 2017-2018.
