Americas Consumption

November 2018

Latin American gas demand is set to face weather-driven and economic headwinds over the coming months.

Prospects for mild weather in northeastern Brazil during the southern hemisphere summer (December-February) will stymie growth in the country’s gas demand. The region’s arid climate generally boosts power sector gas demand during the summer, when hydropower generation falls. However, preliminary forecasts suggest rainfall in northeastern Brazil will be 0.8 millimetres per day (mm/d) below average during the 2018-2019 summer compared with 1.4 mm/d below average during the 2017-2018 summer.
