The German government’s working group on environmental issues has proposed a set of rules for the shale gas exploration sector just days after the national upper house approved a resolution calling for stricter regulation in the sector.

Environmental impact assessments should be completed on every project, with the use of hydraulic fracturing near water reserves banned, the group said in a paper.
