Japan has lodged a protest with China against exploration taking place at a gas field in a contested area of the East China Sea, the Japanese government announced on Monday, according to The Mainichi.

A Chinese drillship is believed to have sunk a borehole in mid-November intended to develop resources near the median line separating the exclusive economic zones of the two countries, a Japanese official said.
