African Petroleum has relinquished its interest in two licences off the coast of Sierra Leone.

African Petroleum has relinquished its interest in two licences off the coast of Sierra Leone with immediate effect, the Norway-listed company has reported.

The decision comes after African Petroleum decided not to commit to an ultra-deepwater drilling programme following its failure to negotiate an appropriate extension to the SL-03-17 and SL-4A-17 licences with the Sierra Leonean government.

The company is also understood to have failed to attract suitable partners.
