The first vessel in Asia to run on methanol, which could eventually compete with LNG as a bunker fuel, is expected to set sail from Singapore in late 2019, Singaporean newspaper The Business Times reported on Monday.

Non-profit lobby group the Methanol Institute and Nanyang Technological University are jointly funding a pilot trial costing less than $200,000, which will see a conventional ship retrofitted with an imported methanol-fuelled engine.
