The European Parliament backed stricter carbon dioxide emission reduction targets for new trucks and lorries in a plenary vote in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

MEPs voted in favour of a 35% CO2 reduction by 2030 compared with 1990 levels, higher than the European Commission’s original proposal of 30%. They also backed an intermediate target of 20% by 2025.

The vote still needs backing from government ministers in the Council of the EU to be passed into law.
