Senior officials from the European Commission often highlight the potential of renewable gases, but the body has yet to design policies that explicitly favour investment in hydrogen, biomethane or other ‘clean gases’. 

Strong voices in the gas industry are calling for EU-wide, binding targets for renewable gases, but the commission is also under pressure to design technology-neutral policies. It has therefore been reluctant to propose a technology-specific target.
