Canada’s federal government has agreed to exempt the C$40 billion ($31 billion) LNG Canada project from steel tariffs that would have increased costs by another C$1 billion, The Globe and Mail reported on Wednesday.

The government agreed with the Shell-led consortium behind LNG Canada that imported steel modules will be needed to build the plant, as there is no Canadian supplier of the components.

This will allow the project to avoid tariffs if federal agencies concur.
