The political and economic climate in Northeast Asia is becoming increasingly favourable towards the construction of international gas pipelines, projects that would transform the region’s gas market. However, pipelines pose a threat to LNG import infrastructure, which could end up being underused if piped supplies are cheaper.

The improvement in relations between Pyongyang and Seoul has revived interest in a pipeline running from Russia through North Korea and on to South Korea, and made it a more realistic prospect than at any time during the past decade....
