Latin America’s vast endowment of commodities – including oil and gas – is the main rationale for China’s recent attempts to wind the region into its so-called Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). 

However, Beijing is likely to ensure LNG supply from the region by expediting the transit of Atlantic Basin cargoes through the Panama Canal rather than boosting imports from Peru, which is on South America’s Pacific Coast.
