India will seek to increase the amount of LNG it imports from the United States over the coming months and years as it seeks to reduce its trade surplus with the country and avoid trade tariffs. 

The US placed tariffs on India because of the large trade imbalance between the two countries, which US President Donald Trump believes places domestic manufacturers at a disadvantage. In retaliation, India imposed tariffs on 19 June on imports from the US worth around $290 million.
