The Sanmen nuclear power station in eastern China’s Zhejiang province has successfully reached initial criticality at its first reactor, China’s State Nuclear Power Technology Corp. (SNPTC) said on Thursday.

The development brings the facility closer to commercial operations, according to SNPTC.

The plant is the first in the world to be based on the AP1000 design from Westinghouse Electric.

Westinghouse said the next step is for the plant to start producing power and to be connected to the electricity grid.
