Soldiers have been deployed to Mendi, the capital of the Southern Highlands region of Papua New Guinea, to quell rioting and protests that could threaten the PNG LNG export plant, according to the Post Courier.

The Southern Highlands government has been suspended and an administrator has been appointed by the national government. Protesters set a plane alight at Mendi airport and also set fire to official buildings and the governor’s residence.
