The European Commission has reached a final settlement with Gazprom in the six-year-old antitrust investigation against the company, potentially paving the way for more competitive markets in Eastern Europe and better energy relations between Moscow and Brussels.

Although some will criticise the commission for not imposing a fine on Gazprom – as it did in cases against Microsoft and Google – the commitments made by Gazprom regarding its customers in Eastern Europe could herald a new dawn for the way the company operates in the region.
