United States-based pressure group the Environmental Defense Fund plans to build and launch a satellite that will measure major global sources of methane, according to The Japan Times.

The satellite will assess 50 oil and gas regions that account for about 80% of production as part of its mission.

The project, which will cost tens of millions of dollars and could take up to three years to launch, would be financed through charitable donations.
