German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said progress on Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project will not be possible until questions are resolved over Ukraine’s role as a transit country for Russian gas, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

“I made very clear that [Nord Stream 2] is not possible without clarity on the future transit role of Ukraine,” Merkel said after a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Berlin.

“It is not just an economic issue but there are also political considerations,” she added.
