Mexican state-run giant Pemex has signed what appears to be one of Mexico’s first big unconventional contracts with a subsidiary of Texas-based Lewis Energy, according to the Associated Press.

The two companies will explore unconventional gas deposits in the Mexican section of the Eagle Ford shale formation.

The project involves about $617 million in investment and may achieve gas production of 3.3 million cubic metres per day by 2021, said Pemex.
