The government of Sweden decided on Friday to allow municipalities to ban diesel vehicles from their town centres by the beginning of 2020 unless they meet emissions criteria, local media has reported.

Diesel cars meeting Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards will be permitted in the environmental zones created by municipalities. However, from 1 July 2022 only Euro 6 diesel vehicles will be allowed. Petrol vehicles will be allowed in the zones if they meet Euro 5 standards.
