South Korea’s LNG consumption will increase by 3% in 2018, to 47.8 mtoe, Platts reported on Monday, citing a forecast from the state-run Korea Energy Economics Institute.
The country is looking to increase gas-fired power generation to reduce its heavy reliance on coal and nuclear.
Public concerns over air pollution and nuclear safety will boost demand for cleaner electricity, while unfavourable weather conditions will also support gas demand, according to the institute.
