A key Chinese state laboratory for the development of methane hydrates backed by China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC) has held its inauguration ceremony in Beijing after being approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Chinese news outlet Yicai reported on Wednesday.

China has in excess of 79.2 billion tons of oil equivalent in methane hydrate resources, which are found in tundra or on the seafloor.

This would be enough to meet domestic oil demand for around 155 years, according to the report.
