Taiwan’s Atomic Energy Council has approved a plan to restart Unit 2 of the Kuosheng nuclear power plant, according to World Nuclear News.

The final decision on whether to restart the reactor rests with the Legislative Yuan, the country’s parliament.

The 948 MW reactor was taken offline in May 2016 following a fire caused by a short circuit.

If approved by the Yuan, Unit 2 will be able to continue operating until its licence expires in March 2023.
