A controversial proposal to extend the EU Gas Directive to cover pipelines entering the bloc from third countries – such as Russia – stirred debate in Brussels this week. Lawmakers and legal experts expressed different views on whether the revision would enhance upstream competition and security of supply. 

The European Commission proposal for a revised directive will be put to a vote in the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) on 21 March and is expected to win support from a majority of MEPs...
