Energy consumption in the EU28 countries rose in 2016 compared with the previous year, as the bloc moved further away from its 2020 energy-efficiency target. 

Distance to target, energy consumption

Countries in the EU have committed to reducing their energy consumption by 20% by 2020 compared with a projected ‘business-as-usual’ scenario. However, recent data by Eurostat shows the bloc is 4% off the savings target for primary energy and 2% off for final energy consumption.
