The growth of utility-scale battery storage in the UK seems inevitable and is set to eat into the role of traditional gas peaking plants, delegates heard at the Energy Storage: Automotive and Grids conference on Tuesday.

Conference speakers said there was little doubt that batteries would play an increasing role in balancing power grids worldwide over the coming years. However, the level to which the technology will be utilised and the form it will take is still a matter of some debate.
