Perry gives FERC extension on nuclear and coal plan

Rick Perry has given the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission a 30-day extension to decide whether to prevent coal and nuclear power plants from closing.

United States Energy Secretary Rick Perry has given the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) a 30-day extension to decide whether to prevent coal and nuclear power plants from closing by paying them to keep fuel on site.

FERC had previously received an extension until 11 December, but the new deadline is 11 January. Perry said in a letter to FERC on Friday that the coal and nuclear industry needs additional funding immediately as there are “serious threats to the nation’s electricity grid”.
