Environmental groups in the state of New Mexico have challenged reports by state energy officials of a drop in methane emissions from oil and gas projects.

Nearly 570,000 tons of methane are released per year through energy projects in New Mexico, according to a report published by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) on Thursday.

New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Secretary Ken McQueen said last week that emissions have dropped by 50% in the state in the past year.
