EC proposes third package extension for Nord Stream 2

The European Commission has proposed extending the existing EU Gas Directive to pipelines entering Europe from third countries.

The European Commission has proposed extending the existing EU Gas Directive to pipelines entering Europe from third countries, it said on Wednesday.

If adopted, the proposal would mean rules under the Third Energy Package, such as third-party access and unbundling, could also apply to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

"This will ensure that all major pipelines entering the EU territory comply with EU rules, are operated under the same degree of transparency, are accessible to other operators and are operated efficiently," the commission said in a statement.
