New ice-class LNG tanker sets off on Northern Route

The first of the ice-class tankers built for the Yamal LNG plant in Russia’s Arctic Circle has embarked on a journey via the Northern Sea route.

The Christophe de Margerie, the first of the ice-class LNG tankers built for the Yamal LNG plant in Russia’s Arctic Circle, has embarked on a journey via the Northern Sea route from Norway’s Hammerfest LNG project to South Korea, according to Hellenic Shipping News.

This will be the vessel’s first commercial voyage via the route. The Christophe de Margerie is one of 15 vessels ordered for the project, from which the first cargo is expected in October.
