The UK government is expected to announce on Wednesday a ban on all new diesel and petrol cars and vans from 2040 as part of a new clean air plan.

The plan has been delayed by legal battles, as previous versions were considered unable to meet EU pollution limits, and final measures are due by 31 July.

The UK announcement follows French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to also end sales of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040.
