If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. But that is not the case with Argentina’s rewards for gas production – which are real, but devilishly complicated. 

A simple way of understanding the incentives is to see them as two eras. The age of strategic extravagance will end on 31 December 2017, giving way to one with more restraint. Buenos Aires will gradually reduce the scope and size of the rewards in coming years – and demand something in return.
