Indonesia renames its section of South China Sea

By Staff reporter 17 July 2017

Indonesia has renamed its section of the South China Sea as the North Natuna Sea, according to Maritime Executive. The area overlaps China’s wide-ranging claims to the South China Sea.

The International Hydrographic Organisation recognises the Natuna Sea, which extends from the Natuna and Anambas Islands to the Belitung Islands, but Indonesia also wants to receive recognition from the organisation for North Natuna Sea.

China’s foreign ministry spokesman has called the renaming ‘meaningless’. The waters hold gas reserves and valuable fishery resources.
