The United States has 90 operational reactors at 60 nuclear power plants, according to a report from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
Exelon, owner of Three Mile Island, recently announced plans to retire the plant in 2019 unless it receives financial assistance from the state of Pennsylvania.
The decision to retire plants is attributed to increased competition from gas and renewables, which has made it difficult for nuclear power to compete.
