The European Commission has requested a mandate from the Council of the EU to negotiate the key principles with Russia for the operation of the planned Nord Stream 2
gas pipeline project, the commission said on Friday.

If built, the commission wants to ensure Nord Stream 2 operates in a "transparent and non-discriminatory way" and with an "appropriate degree of regulatory oversight", in line with key principles of international and EU energy law, the commission said in a statement.
