The United States’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement may well have little impact on the country’s emissions. However, Brand USA could take a battering in the LNG market.
The immediate worry is that the image of US LNG has been tainted. This could see it stigmatised as a ‘dirty fuel’, when the opposite is true. The sales pitch will certainly feel hollow if US companies plug the fuel as a solution to climate change when their own government has not signed up to the global cause.
