Senators in West Virginia in the United States have asked federal officials to consider "the numerous benefits" of a gas storage and distribution hub in the Appalachian region.

The senators wrote to National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn asking the body to review and consider the idea because the region holds underutilised reserves of shale gas.

A study by the American Chemistry Council said the proposed hub could attract $36 billion in investment.
