Wind buffets Brazilian gas demand

Brazil has built nearly 10 GW of wind capacity over the last five years. However, a big sector needs big back-up

The swift growth of Brazil’s wind industry has taken a bite out of the country’s gas demand. However, the sector also offers gas-focused companies an opportunity. 

Brazil’s wind sector is growing quickly – the country is set to boost its installed capacity by nearly 23% in 2017, with just over 7 GW under construction, according to wind association Abeeolica. Brazil had 435 wind parks as of 2 May 2017, accounting for around 7.2% of the country’s installed capacity.
