The southern Chinese provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Hainan consumed a total of 22.1 billion cubic metres of gas in 2016, up by 8.4% year on year, which was faster than the national growth rate of 6.6% for the year.

The National Energy Administration said it expected gas consumption growth in the five provinces to remain high, but predicted supply will exceed demand.
