Hebei, home to six of China’s 10 smoggiest cities in the first two months of 2017, plans to close 4 GW of coal-fired power capacity by 2020 – 6.4% of the province’s total installed capacity – as part of efforts to curb air pollution.
Small coal-fired power plants with capacities of 200 MW account for more than two-thirds of Hebei’s generation.
Other measures to improve air quality include substituting coal with gas and renewable power, and eliminating outdated power generation capacity in urban areas by 2020.
