The number of active rigs exploring for oil and gas in the United States increased by 21, to 789, for the week ending 17 March, oil services provider Baker Hughes has reported.
There were 476 active rigs in use for the same period last year, according to Baker Hughes data.
Last week saw 631 oil rigs in use and 157 for gas.
One was listed as miscellaneous.
The US rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and recorded its lowest level in May 2016, at 404....
