China’s Latin love affair continues

Brazil was the focus of Chinese lending in 2016 as Beijing eyes the Latin American country’s future oil production

Beijing is still propping up Latin America’s energy sector with billions of dollars in loans. Around 70% of China’s lending to the region went to Brazil last year, according to the Inter-American Dialogue. China loaned $21.2 billion to Latin America in 2016, making it the third-highest year on record for such borrowing. Latin America has borrowed more than $140 billion from China since 2005, according to data published last week by the Washington-based thinktank.
