French power generation from gas-fired plants increased by 61% in 2016 compared with 2015, according to transmission system operator RTE. Gas moved from a 4% share of total production in 2015 up to a 6.6% share in 2016. 

But despite the increase in generation from gas – and an 8.2% increase in hydropower, 11.3% increase in solar and 6.3% increase in bioenergy – total power production in France dipped by 2.8% last year. This was mainly the result of the 7.9% drop in nuclear production.
